Building the Future
Federation of Model Engineering Societies
We provide support for affiliated Model Engineering Societies (‘clubs’) across the length and breadth of the UK . We act on behalf of members in co-ordinating responses to important issues facing the hobby of Model Engineering including safety and legislation. We also promote the hobby through news, events and competitions and provide advice and guides for good practice in club activities.
FMES is a company limited by guarantee and was established originally in 1970 by Model Engineers for Model Engineers. We run entirely through the effort of volunteers from member clubs, seeking information and comment from commercial and official bodies where relevant.
What we Do
Our aims are to promote the enjoyment of Model Engineering as a hobby by helping Model Engineers, through their clubs, navigate a route through contemporary legislative and social requirements to retain the freedom and enjoyment that is the essence of any hobby. We do this through liaison with other representative hobby organisations, with government officials, insurance companies and indeed with anyone with a contribution.
We have been instrumental in defining responses to boiler testing of miniature live steam engines, a safety approach to running passenger carrying railways, the evolution of specific insurance policies and in interpreting various types of legislation that affects club activity. We respond to particular issues raised by clubs by offering comment and support and we actively encourage newcomers to the hobby through events, exhibitions competitions and guidance.
